This Warwick, NY deck reconstruction gave an aging wood deck a fresh start without changing its original footprint. After removing the existing deck and finding significant joist rot, we rebuilt the framing while reusing the existing above-grade concrete footings. New pressure treated 2x4 decking was installed throughout, along with a custom staircase featuring deeper treads for a comfortable, gentle transition into the yard.
This deck reconstruction in Warwick, NY started with an existing wood deck that had reached the point where repairs no longer made much sense. While the basic layout of the deck still worked well for the homeowners, the framing underneath had significant joist rot and needed to be replaced.
Rather than changing the size or configuration, we kept the existing deck geometry and rebuilt it from the footings up.
We started by removing the existing decking and deteriorated framing. Once everything was opened up, we were able to get a clear look at the existing foundation and footings.
The concrete footings were still in good condition and extended above grade, so we were able to reuse them for the new deck. Keeping the existing footprint and footing locations also meant there was no reason to disturb more of the yard than necessary.
From there, we reframed the deck with new pressure treated lumber, replacing the rotted joists and giving the deck a solid structure again.
For the finished surface, we installed new pressure treated 2x4 decking. The thicker 2x4 boards give the deck a substantial, traditional wood feel and are a great fit for homeowners who prefer real wood over composite decking. This also matched an upper section of the deck that we did not disturb and ended up created a unique look and feel compared with traditional 5.5" wide decking boards, wood or composite.
Pressure treated lumber also keeps the project relatively straightforward and affordable while providing a durable outdoor surface that can be stained or sealed as it ages.
One of the more unique parts of this deck was the staircase. Instead of using a typical stair configuration, we built custom stairs with deeper treads to create a gentler transition from the deck down to the yard.
The additional tread depth makes the stairs feel less steep and gives them a comfortable, gradual appearance that works nicely with the low deck.
Not every aging deck needs to be completely redesigned. In this case, the homeowners were happy with the existing size and layout. The problem was simply that the old framing had deteriorated.
By keeping the existing geometry and reusing footings, we were able to focus the project on what actually needed attention: replacing the rotted structure and building a new deck that should serve the homeowners for years to come.
